Bottlenose Dolphins are native to the South Padre Island area. The Gulf of Mexico's warm tropical waters attracts dolphins to dwell near Texas beaches, primarily in bays, estuaries and shipping channels.  Schools of Bottlenose Dolphins can range into the hundreds but are typically seen in groups of two to 15.  Known as the intelligent and charismatic stars of many aquatic centers, Bottlenose dolphins show their intelligence and charisma in nature through their hunting capabilities and naturally smiley faces.
With the use of echolocation, Bottlenose Dolphins track their prey by using up to 1,000 clicking noises per second.  As the sound travels through the water it bounces off objects sending the noise back to the sending dolphin. These intelligent creatures are able to decipher the size, location and shape of their targets.  Bottlenose Dolphins primarily feed off of bottom dwelling fish as well as shrimp and squid.  Bottlenose dolphins can also be seen following closely behind fishing boats hoping for left overs that make for great dining opportunities.

Bottlenose Dolphins are excellent swimmers and can reach speeds of up to 18 miles per hour approaching the surface 2 or 3 times a minute to breathe. Dolphins are found primarily traveling in groups and communicating with each other through a very complex system of whistles and squeaks. Bottlenose dolphins are known to interact closely working together during feeding, protecting their group and in nursery activities.

Breeding habits along the Texas coast have been studied to determine when offspring, or calves, are typically born.  According to studies, Bottlenose Dolphins in our warm South Padre Island waters breed during the summer months with calves being born between March and May.  When a calf is born, it is approximately 1/3 of the size of its mother and is nurtured by the whole group during its upbringing.
